In the short story Kirsten's Promise, we're reminded that life in Minnesota Territory can be difficult. Kirsten encounters a little boy named Ezra who is cold, starving, and utterly alone after his mother dies on the wagon trip west. He refuses help, and makes Kirsten promise not to tell anyone he's alone. But Kirsten is wise, and after talking with her brother Lars, she realizes "a person's life is more important than a promise".

So this is my rendition of Kirsten's 2003 Plaid Dress and Shawl that's associated with the short story. It's hard to find and it's never affordable, so I decided to make it myself. I bought the fabric from this Spoonflower shop. I really struggled to make this look good since I didn't have a pattern, and so I had to omit the scalloped sleeve hems, and just did the best I could for the bodice piece. I still might remake that part eventually. But the dress looks better with the shawl anyway. I made the shawl from a very soft woven kitchen linen of some kind that I found at the thrift store. I folded it in half, stitched it together to give it a quilted look, and fringed the ends.

My Kirsten almost has a complete outfit collection--I'm still missing a couple of pieces that I plan on reproducing some day, just like this one!

i recently watched babbity kate's 6 hour video on kirsten and boy did it unlock some memories!! so i felt the need to revisit this beloved character from my childhood in her iconic saint lucia gown 🌟

I’ve seen people draw fanart of Monster High and Winx Club, and aside from the Mane6 from My Little Pony, I didn’t think I had a fictional girl group that I liked as a kid, until I remembered the OGs 😤 American Girl books. These put hair on my chest as a kid, I’d just be reading an inspiring story about an immigrant when BAM! her best friend dies of Cholera. And her parents tell her to stop crying about it and then the books never mention the dead friend again. Good reading material for a sprightly nine-year-old with anxiety issues.

hi everyone! i would like to share these pleasant company notes from the heart note cards i got today! i don’t know much about them, so please feel free to share if you know anymore!

i got these off ebay for about 15, they are from 2003 and hallmark licensed. they came in this very adorable tin!

they come with 16 cards, with 8 girls on them (2 for each girl)!

each card has a quote on them, shown in this picture i made:

kit: “I wish I could find just the right words to tell you what a good friend you are to me.”

samantha: “I'm glad I've got a friend like you to share my secrets with.”

felicity: “We're two of akind - loyal and true. It's greatbeing friends with someone like you.”

addy: “I have you, and you have me- we're true-blue, and we'll always be.”

Finally finished Kirsten Larson's extra outfits! Her collection is small and AG hasn't brought her back in years but her stuff is so solid. A lot of cute looks for her

Winter in Minnesota Territory can feel endless. Right now is the dullest and coldest part of winter, but Kirsten Larson has made the short days a little bit brighter by finding the perfect skating ice!

This shallow section of the creek has frozen solid, all the way down to the riverbed. Kirsten's brothers Lars and Peter and her cousins Lisbeth and Anna meet her there to join her on the ice.

After an hour, everybody is ready to head home and warm up, but Kirsten doesn't follow right away. She's feeling a sense of familiarity here as she fastens the straps on her snowshoes. Why does she feel like she has been here before?

Kirsten contemplates this feeling for a while until she suddenly remembers why this place feels familiar.

The bluffs and overhangs by the creek guide her. Kirsten follows them deep into the woods, looking for landmarks along the way. She is long past anyone's footprints. Even the hunters and trappers don't come this way.

She couldn't give directions to the place if she were asked. She's only navigating by remembering each turn.

This is the one, she thinks. Something about the shape of these rocks tugs at her memories. She climbs the rocks and sees the cave.

She came here often with her old friend, Singing Bird. Their secret place, where they hid from the world. It's also where she and Papa took shelter from a snowstorm the first winter they lived here. But she hasn't been back here since then.

Kirsten wonders where Singing Bird is now. If she comes back, will she know how to find Kirsten, since her family's cabin burned down?

So Kirsten leaves a little drawing in the dirt, just like they used to do to communicate with each other. She draws the Larson family's new house, with its many windows and the tree with the swing by the front door.

If Singing Bird returns someday, she may be drawn back to this place, just like Kirsten was today. And she'll know Kirsten is still close by, waiting to see her again.
